Spawn needed Total colonized grain spawn based on substrate weight × spawn rate.
0.6 kg
0.3 kg per container
Total mix weight Hydrated substrate plus spawn weight.
5.6 kg
2.8 kg per container
Ratio check Compares your spawn percentage with the common range for the selected species profile.
12%
Within common target range
Spawn as total mix Same spawn amount expressed as a percentage of final substrate+spawn mix. This avoids convention confusion.
10.7%

Colonization estimate Rule-of-thumb days based on species, method, and spawn rate. Temperature and technique dominate in real grows.

Oyster mushroom · Pasteurized straw / bucket
Dry substrate basis Hydrated substrate weight multiplied by non-water fraction. Biological efficiency uses dry substrate weight.
2 kg

Cultivation estimate only. Follow local laws, sterile/pasteurization procedures, species-specific protocols, and food-safety guidance. Do not cultivate or consume unidentified or illegal mushrooms.

Score from the build-order list

This calculator is item #98 — Mushroom Spawn-to-Substrate Ratio Calculator from the build-order list, with score:

Vol / Comp / Ratio = 3 / 1 / 3.0

It is the fifth calculator from the research-prioritised group after cabinet paint, pond pump/filter, compost C:N, and rainwater harvesting.

What this estimate does and does not do

This calculator estimates how much colonized grain spawn to mix with a given weight of mushroom substrate. It also estimates total block/bag/tub weight, spawn per container, spawn percentage of total mix, rough colonization time, dry substrate weight, and a rough fresh-yield range based on biological efficiency.

It does not replace a species-specific cultivation protocol. Mushroom cultivation depends on genetics, sterile technique, pasteurization/sterilization, substrate formula, moisture, temperature, gas exchange, contamination pressure, fruiting conditions, and local laws. This page is intended for legal gourmet/culinary mushroom cultivation only.

Formula / method used

Spawn by substrate-weight convention

The calculator uses the common convention:

spawn ratio % = spawn weight ÷ substrate weight × 100

So the required spawn is:

spawn weight = substrate weight × spawn ratio % ÷ 100

Total mix:

total mix weight = substrate weight + spawn weight

The calculator also shows the alternate convention:

spawn % of total mix = spawn weight ÷ total mix weight × 100

This avoids confusion because some growers say “20% spawn” while others mean spawn as part of the final mixed block.

Container portions

substrate per container = substrate weight ÷ container count
spawn per container = spawn weight ÷ container count
total mix per container = total mix weight ÷ container count

Dry substrate and yield estimate

Biological efficiency, or BE, compares fresh mushroom yield with dry substrate weight:

dry substrate weight = wet substrate weight × (1 - substrate moisture %)
estimated fresh yield = dry substrate weight × biological efficiency %

Yield is highly variable and should be treated as a planning estimate only.

Colonization estimate

Colonization timing is a rough heuristic based on species, method, and spawn ratio:

estimated days = species baseline days × method factor × sqrt(target spawn ratio ÷ entered spawn ratio)

Higher spawn ratios generally colonize faster, but only when the spawn is healthy and evenly mixed.

Worked example

For 5 kg hydrated straw substrate, oyster mushrooms, 12% spawn, and 2 buckets:

spawn weight = 5 × 12% = 0.6 kg
total mix = 5 + 0.6 = 5.6 kg
substrate per bucket = 5 ÷ 2 = 2.5 kg
spawn per bucket = 0.6 ÷ 2 = 0.3 kg
total per bucket = 5.6 ÷ 2 = 2.8 kg

Spawn as a share of total mix:

spawn % of total mix = 0.6 ÷ 5.6 × 100 = 10.7%

If the hydrated substrate is 60% water, then dry substrate is 40% of the weight:

dry substrate = 5 × 40% = 2 kg
at 100% biological efficiency, rough fresh yield ≈ 2 kg

Common starter ranges

Species / situationCommon spawn rate by substrate weight
Oyster on straw or hardwood10–15%
Lion’s mane on hardwood15–20%
Chestnut on supplemented hardwood15–20%
Shiitake on hardwood blocks20–25%
Reishi on hardwood15–25%
Outdoor bedsOften 10–20%, highly variable

Use higher rates when conditions are less forgiving or you need faster colonization. Use lower rates only when grain spawn is the limiting input and your process is clean and consistent.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Ratios are by weight, not volume.
  • Substrate weight is assumed to be hydrated/wet unless you intentionally enter dry weight consistently.
  • Yield is estimated from dry substrate and biological efficiency, not guaranteed production.
  • Colonization days are a rough planning estimate.
  • Species profiles are simplified and may not match your strain or substrate.
  • Outdoor beds are highly seasonal and less predictable.
  • Do not cultivate illegal species or consume unidentified mushrooms.
  • Follow proper sterilization/pasteurization, contamination disposal, and food-safety procedures.

Frequently asked questions

What does a 20% mushroom spawn ratio mean?

In this calculator, 20% means spawn weight is 20% of substrate weight. For example, 1 kg of spawn mixed into 5 kg of hydrated substrate is a 20% spawn-to-substrate ratio.

Is spawn ratio based on substrate weight or total block weight?

Both conventions exist. This calculator uses spawn divided by substrate weight for inputs, then also shows spawn as a percentage of total mix to avoid confusion.

What spawn ratio should I use?

Many gourmet grows use roughly 10–20% spawn by substrate weight. Aggressive species like oysters may work at 10–15%, while slower species such as shiitake often use higher rates. Your sterile technique and substrate matter.

Does more spawn always mean more mushrooms?

Not necessarily. More spawn usually speeds colonization and can reduce contamination risk, but returns flatten and grain spawn adds cost, heat, and extra nutrition that can also feed contaminants.

Is this a cultivation protocol?

No. It is a legal gourmet mushroom planning calculator. Follow local laws, species-specific protocols, sterile or pasteurization procedures, contamination controls, and food-safety guidance.
