What this estimate does and does not do
This calculator estimates a disc golf speed rating from your current realistic flat-ground distance. It is based on the community “rule of 35”: divide your max controllable distance in feet by 35 to estimate a max-efficiency disc speed.
It does not measure actual arm speed, release velocity, spin rate, or form quality. Disc speed is not miles per hour. It is a flight-rating number. The right disc also depends on stability, wind, elevation, weight, plastic, wear, release angle, and whether you want maximum distance or repeatable control.
Formula used
rule-of-35 speed = round(max distance in feet / 35)
tailwind adjustment = +1 speed per 10 mph tailwind, capped at +2
recommended speed = clamp(round(rule-of-35 speed + wind adjustment), 1, 14)
control speed = recommended speed - 1
alternative speed = round((distance feet - 210) / 20), clamped 1–14The alternative formula is included as a more conservative intended-flight estimate. It is useful because the rule of 35 can be optimistic for putters, midranges, and very high-speed drivers.
Worked example
If your realistic max flat-ground throw is 300 feet in calm weather:

How to use the result
- Use the recommended speed as the top of your first test range.
- Use the control speed when accuracy matters more than raw distance.
- If your current disc is much faster than the recommendation, try discing down.
- In a headwind, prioritise stability more than speed.
- In a tailwind, understable discs may fly better than very overstable drivers.
- Field test several neutral or understable discs around the suggested speed range.
Disc classes by speed
Typical disc classes are:
- Speed 1–3: putters and approach discs
- Speed 4–5: midranges
- Speed 6–9: fairway or control drivers
- Speed 10–14: distance drivers
These classes are approximate and vary by manufacturer.
Assumptions and limitations
- Use a realistic, repeatable throw, not your one-time best.
- The rule works best as a rough driver-speed estimate, not a perfect model for every disc class.
- Slower discs often reveal form issues better than high-speed drivers.
- A very overstable disc can still fade early even if the speed number seems correct.
- High elevation and wind can change the effective stability more than the speed recommendation.
