What this estimate does and does not do
This calculator helps plan a counted cross-stitch project before you cut fabric or buy floss. It estimates the stitched design size, fabric cut size with margins, whether an existing fabric piece is large enough, approximate skeins, needle size, strand recommendation, and stitching time.
It does not replace your pattern’s floss legend or per-color stitch counts. Thread use changes with stitching method, tails, frogging, parking, cross-country stitching, blends, backstitch, fractional stitches, fabric brand, floss brand, and dye lot. Use this as a planning and budgeting estimate, then buy exact colors from the pattern instructions when possible.
Formula / method used
For fabric size, the key is the effective fabric count:
effective count = fabric count ÷ stitch-over threadsFor Aida stitched over one square, 14-count Aida stays 14 stitches per inch. For evenweave or linen stitched over two threads, 28-count becomes an effective 14-count.

fabric cut height = stitched height + 2 × margin per sideFor floss, the calculator starts with a conservative planning baseline of about 960 full cross stitches per 8 m, 6-strand skein on 14-count fabric with 2 strands. It scales that by fabric count and strand count:
stitches per skein = 960 × (effective count ÷ 14) × (2 ÷ strands used)
stitched stitches = width stitches × height stitches × coverage %
adjusted stitches = stitched stitches × (1 + waste buffer %)
skein equivalents = adjusted stitches ÷ stitches per skein
planning skeins = max(number of colors, ceil(skein equivalents))The planning skeins result is a budget-level estimate. If you know the stitch count for each color, calculate dominant colors separately and buy extra where dye-lot mismatch would show.
Worked example
For a chart that is 140 stitches wide by 98 stitches high on 14-count Aida, stitched over 1 with a 3 inch margin:
effective count = 14 ÷ 1 = 14 stitches/in
stitched width = 140 ÷ 14 = 10 in
stitched height = 98 ÷ 14 = 7 in
fabric cut width = 10 + 2 × 3 = 16 in
fabric cut height = 7 + 2 × 3 = 13 inIf about 70% of the chart is stitched, using 2 strands, 20 colors, and a 15% floss buffer:
total chart squares = 140 × 98 = 13,720
stitched stitches = 13,720 × 70% = 9,604
adjusted stitches = 9,604 × 1.15 ≈ 11,045
skein equivalents = 11,045 ÷ 960 ≈ 11.5Because the pattern uses 20 colors, the shopping estimate is at least 20 skeins if you need one skein of each color.
How to use the result
- Use the pattern’s chart width and height in stitches, not the printed page size.
- Enter the fabric’s labelled count: 14 for 14-count Aida, 28 for 28-count evenweave, and so on.
- Choose “over 2” for most linen/evenweave cross stitch if each X spans two fabric threads.
- Use 100% coverage for full-coverage patterns and a lower percentage for samplers or open-background designs.
- Keep at least 2–3 inches / 5–8 cm of margin per side unless your finishing method says otherwise.
- Treat the floss result as a planning estimate unless you have per-color stitch counts.
Assumptions and limitations
- Fabric count is assumed to be threads per inch.
- Metric input affects the margin and existing-fabric fields; fabric count remains per inch because that is how Aida/evenweave is usually sold.
- The existing-fabric check assumes a rectangular cut and does not account for badly skewed edges or shrinkage from washing.
- The floss model estimates full cross stitches only. Backstitch, half stitches, French knots, beads, couching, and specialty threads are not included.
- The color-count input cannot know whether one color is a huge background or a tiny accent.
- If a dominant color is close to the next skein boundary, buy an extra skein from the same dye lot.

How do I calculate cross-stitch fabric size?
Divide the pattern stitch width and height by the effective fabric count to get the stitched design size, then add the margin on both sides. For 28-count evenweave stitched over 2, the effective count is 14 stitches per inch.
What margin should I add around a cross-stitch design?
Many stitchers use about 2 to 3 inches, or 5 to 8 cm, per side for hooping, stretching, and framing. Professional framing, large pieces, or finishing methods may need more.
How many stitches does one skein of floss cover?
This calculator uses a practical planning baseline of about 960 full cross stitches per 8 m, 6-strand skein on 14-count fabric with 2 strands, then scales by fabric count and strand count. Actual coverage varies by stitching method and waste.
Why does the skein estimate include a palette floor?
If a pattern uses 20 colors, you usually need at least one skein of each color even when the total thread length is less than 20 skeins. Without per-color stitch counts, the estimate can only show a planning total and average per color.
Does this replace the pattern's floss legend?
No. Use the pattern's per-color stitch counts or designer floss legend for final shopping, especially for full-coverage pieces, blended colors, backstitch, and dominant backgrounds.
