This calculator estimates sugar, water, finished syrup volume, feeder fills, and container fit for common beekeeping syrup ratios. It is intended for practical feeding preparation, not veterinary, disease-management, or regional overwintering advice.
Bee feeding decisions depend on colony strength, stores, nectar flow, season, weather, hive type, local forage, and your local beekeeping guidance. Use this calculator to mix the syrup accurately, then decide whether and how much to feed based on inspection, hive weight, and local best practice.
Formula used
The calculator treats syrup ratio by weight:
water kg = sugar kg × water parts / sugar parts
syrup weight = sugar kg + water kg
finished volume = syrup weight / syrup density
feeder fills = finished volume / feeder capacityWhen solving from a target finished volume, it works backward:
syrup weight = target volume × syrup density
sugar kg = syrup weight × sugar parts / (sugar parts + water parts)
water litres = syrup weight × water parts / (sugar parts + water parts)Because 1 litre of water weighs about 1 kg, metric syrup mixing is especially straightforward.
Density assumptions
The calculator uses typical room-temperature density estimates:
- 1:1 thin syrup: about 1.21 kg/L
- 1.6:1 heavy syrup: about 1.31 kg/L
- 2:1 max-strength syrup: about 1.33 kg/L
Actual finished volume varies with temperature, sugar type, mixing method, and how fully the sugar dissolves.
Worked example
If you want 10 litres of 1:1 syrup:
syrup weight = 10 L × 1.21 kg/L = 12.1 kg
sugar = 12.1 × 1 / (1 + 1) = 6.05 kg
water = 12.1 × 1 / (1 + 1) = 6.05 LIf you instead have a 4.5 kg bag of sugar and want 2:1 syrup:
water = 4.5 × 1 / 2 = 2.25 L
syrup weight = 4.5 + 2.25 = 6.75 kg

- Use “target volume” when you know how much finished syrup you want.
- Use “sugar on hand” when you want to know how much syrup a bag of sugar will make.
- Check feeder fills to plan how many refills or colonies a batch may cover.
- Check container fill to avoid mixing a batch that will overflow your bucket.
- Keep enough headspace for stirring, especially with heavy syrup.
Mixing and feeding cautions
- Use white granulated sugar.
- Avoid brown, raw, molasses-containing, or unrefined sugars because impurities can harm bees.
- Dissolve sugar fully and let syrup cool before feeding.
- Avoid boiling the syrup after sugar is added; overheating can darken or damage the syrup.
- Feed inside the hive where possible to reduce robbing.
- Keep feeders clean and discard syrup that smells fermented, mouldy, or off.
- Do not feed syrup while honey supers for harvest are on unless your local practice specifically allows it.

Generally no. Feeding syrup while honey supers for human harvest are on can contaminate the crop with stored sugar syrup. Follow local beekeeping guidance.
