What this estimate does and does not do

This calculator estimates paint and primer quantities for cabinet doors, drawer fronts, cabinet boxes or face frames, and exposed end panels. It also estimates rounded purchase amounts, sanding sheets, tack cloths, and material cost.

It does not replace product-specific instructions or a professional quote. Cabinet paint durability depends heavily on cleaning, degreasing, sanding/scuffing, adhesion primer, drying time, cure time, humidity, spray/brush method, and whether the existing finish is sound. Always test adhesion before coating a whole kitchen.

Formula / method used

Paintable area

Door and drawer areas are rectangle estimates:

door area = door count × door width × door height × sides painted
drawer area = drawer count × drawer width × drawer height × sides painted

Cabinet frame/box area is estimated from run length:

frame/box area = cabinet run length × frame area per length

Exposed side panels:

end panel area = exposed panel count × panel width × panel height

Total area:

total paintable area = door area + drawer area + frame/box area + end panel area
order area = total paintable area × (1 + waste % ÷ 100)

Primer and paint quantity

primer needed = order area × primer coats ÷ primer coverage
paint needed = order area × paint coats ÷ paint coverage

In imperial mode, coverage is entered as square feet per gallon and the result is rounded up to quarter-gallon increments. In metric mode, coverage is entered as m² per litre and the result is rounded up to half-litre increments.

Material cost

paint cost = rounded paint amount × paint price per unit
total material cost = primer cost + paint cost

Worked example

For a typical medium kitchen:

  • 20 doors, 15 × 30 inches, both sides
  • 10 drawer fronts, 15 × 8 inches, both sides
  • 25 linear feet of cabinet boxes/frames at 4 sq ft per linear foot
  • 2 exposed end panels, 24 × 34.5 inches
  • 1 primer coat, 2 paint coats, 10% waste
  • primer covers 300 sq ft/gal, paint covers 350 sq ft/gal
door area = 20 × 15 × 30 × 2 ÷ 144 = 125.0 sq ft
drawer area = 10 × 15 × 8 × 2 ÷ 144 = 16.7 sq ft
frame area = 25 × 4 = 100.0 sq ft
end panels = 2 × 24 × 34.5 ÷ 144 = 11.5 sq ft
total area = 253.2 sq ft
order area with 10% waste = 278.5 sq ft

Paint and primer:

primer = 278.5 × 1 ÷ 300 = 0.93 gal → buy about 1 gal
paint = 278.5 × 2 ÷ 350 = 1.59 gal → buy about 1.75 gal

How to use the result

  • Count doors and drawer fronts separately.
  • Use average dimensions if doors are similar; use a larger average if many doors are oversized.
  • Select both sides for a full refinish.
  • Include cabinet face frames, boxes, toe kicks, island backs, and exposed end panels.
  • Use the coverage rate printed on your primer or cabinet enamel label.
  • Round up if using a sprayer or changing from dark to light.
  • Buy an extra small container if you want matching touch-up paint later.

Assumptions and limitations

  • Raised-panel profiles, moulding edges, and shaker recesses are approximated as flat rectangles.
  • Spraying can waste more paint than brushing/rolling.
  • Bare wood, MDF, dark stain, knots, tannins, laminate, and glossy finishes can need extra primer or speciality bonding primer.
  • Paint and primer coverage varies by product, substrate, colour, method, and applicator.
  • This does not estimate labor, masking, hardware replacement, repairs, cleaners, deglosser, caulk, filler, or sprayer rental.
  • Cabinet paint can take days or weeks to fully cure even when dry to the touch.

How much paint do I need for kitchen cabinets?

A medium kitchen often needs about one gallon of cabinet enamel, but the real amount depends on door count, drawer count, whether you paint both sides, cabinet box area, coats, coverage, and waste. This calculator estimates from those inputs rather than using one kitchen-size average.

Do cabinets need primer before paint?

Often yes. Bare wood, MDF, dark stain, tannins, laminate, thermofoil, glossy factory finishes, and dark-to-light color changes usually need a suitable primer or bonding primer. Follow your paint manufacturer's instructions.

Should I paint both sides of cabinet doors?

For a full refinish, yes, doors are usually removed and painted on both sides. For a quick exterior refresh, you may estimate front-only, but durability and appearance may differ.

Why does the calculator include waste?

Cabinet painting loses material to roller trays, sprayer transfer, overspray, sanding between coats, profiles, touchups, and measuring error. A 10% allowance is a practical starting point.
